One-Time Cost vs. Monthly Pricing: What Small Business Website Pricing Actually Means
Highercastle Editorial

If you’ve gotten quotes for a small business website, you’ve seen numbers that make no sense next to each other: one designer wants $3,000 upfront, another offers “$0 down, $99/month.” This post explains what those models actually are, what the money buys in each, and how to decide which fits your business. For the full cost breakdown of what’s in a website, see our post on what a small business website costs.
The one-time model: project pricing
You pay a fixed fee — commonly $1,500–$10,000+ depending on scope — and the designer builds and hands over the site. What you actually get varies wildly: some deliverables include hosting and a month of fixes; others are “here are the files, good luck.” The catch arrives after launch: hosting renewals, software updates, security patches, and the inevitable “can you change our hours?” request — now billed hourly, at emergency rates, by someone who may or may not call you back.
The monthly model: care-plan pricing
You pay a smaller ongoing fee — often $25–$150/month — that bundles the website, hosting, security updates, and content changes. The provider keeps the site working because their revenue depends on it. The tradeoff: you never “own” the arrangement the way you own a delivered project, and a monthly price attached to a bad website is just a bad deal on an installment plan.
Which one is right for you?
- One-time pricing makes sense if you have an in-house person who can maintain the site, or your site genuinely won’t change for years.
- Monthly pricing makes sense if you want the site to stay current, secure, and ranking without becoming your second job — and if the plan includes ongoing value like content updates or blog management, not just hosting.
- Either way, the questions to ask are identical: What’s included? Who owns the content and domain? What happens if I cancel? A trustworthy provider answers all three without hesitating.
At Higher Castle, we price the way we’d want to buy: a modest setup covering the real work of building the site, and a flat monthly that covers hosting, security, updates, and managed blogging — with your domain and content always in your name. Use the contact form below and we’ll tell you exactly what your project would cost, in either model.
